Argentine football legend, Lionel Messi has issued an apology for an embarrassing gaffe which resulted in him confusing fellow Argentine footballer Sebastian Driussi for a supporter.
Messi, who is currently on international duty with the Albiceleste, was greeted at the team hotel in Moscow by Zenit St Petersburg striker Driussi.
The forward had arrived to catch up with some of the players while they were in Russia, and stopped to take some quick snaps for Instagram before heading on his way.
It was only later when Driussi uploaded the snap of himself and Messi to his profile that the Barcelona superstar realised he hadn’t had his photo taken with a supporter, but with a fellow player.
Feeling red-faced about his error, Messi quickly contacted Driussi to apologise and later admitted to Fox Sports Argentina that he does actually know the player.
‘I felt bad for not having recognised him at the time because I do know him. I know who he is. When he asked me for the photograph I thought he was one of the guys that are always waiting for a photograph.
‘When I saw the photograph on Instagram I apologised to him. We had exchanged messages in the past via someone else and we share the same tattoo artist,’ he added.
Druissi, 21, had uploaded the picture of himself and Messi to Instagram along with the caption:
‘Thanks for the photo IDOL Leo Messi.’
